Exploring AI Chatbots in E-Learning

Exploring AI Chatbots in E-Learning

As a relatively new instructional designer, I have already experimented with using ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) for tasks like generating ideas, organizing content, and even creating content. While these tools have been great for brainstorming and content design—especially with proper editing and fact-checking—I hadn’t yet explored how artificial intelligence could be incorporated directly into my learning experiences. So, I decided to try using chatbots to create more engaging, scenario-based e-learning content.

The Idea: AI-Driven Scenario-Based Learning

One of the most exciting possibilities I have seen with AI is designing scenarios where learners could interact dynamically with characters, such as customers or patients, within a training module. Imagine a learner practicing their communication skills by chatting with an AI-powered customer who responds in real-time. This concept has immense potential to increase engagement and immersion.

Challenges with Integrating AI into Articulate Storyline

My research led me to Delvin Peck’s excellent video tutorial on creating and training your own GPT-powered chatbot and embedding it into Articulate Storyline. While his approach demonstrated how to integrate AI seamlessly, it came with a caveat: the process requires an API key.

An API key is linked to personal information, including a credit card. When embedding a chatbot into a project using JavaScript, the API key becomes vulnerable to exposure—potentially putting your personal information at risk. As someone who has experienced fraud in the past, I didn't want to use my personal credit card information for this purpose.

A Safe and Simple Alternative: ClueLabs

Determined to find a solution that didn’t require using my own API key, I discovered ClueLabs! This company provides a platform that allows you to create chatbots without the need for personal API keys or complex coding. ClueLabs has already handled the backend setup and coding, making the process user-friendly. All I had to do was input the information I wanted the chatbot to use—it was that simple.

Testing the Tool: A Movie Recommendation Chatbot

To test the ClueLabs platform, I created a quick fun project: a movie recommendation chatbot. This chatbot asks users about their mood or preferred movie genre and recommends a movie based on their responses. It was a simple yet exciting way to explore the tool’s potential for e-learning scenarios.

I even created a character for the chatbot, using Bing AI to design a happy, smiling character based on a
movie reel. The result was a cheerful virtual assistant named Reel Buddy! This experience gave me hands-on practice and a deeper understanding of how to integrate AI into projects.

Future Applications

While ClueLabs is perfect for portfolio projects or independent experimentation, using AI chatbots in
corporate e-learning would require a different approach. In professional settings, I would probably use JavaScript and ChatGPT APIs—but only with the organization’s resources and security protocols in place. Companies are better equipped to handle the technical and financial responsibilities of keeping API keys and credit card information safe.

Conclusion: A Tool with Immense Potential

This experiment showed me how AI-powered chatbots can transform e-learning by creating interactive and immersive experiences. Whether for fun, portfolio projects, or professional use, tools like ClueLabs make it easier than ever to bring AI into learning environments. While there are a few small echnical challenges to navigate, the potential benefits far outweigh the obstacles.
